Operators

While using operators in DeepJudge Search is possible, it is generally not necessary.

DeepJudge Operators

DeepJudge Search simplifies searching by not requiring complex boolean operators commonly found in legal search engines. However, DeepJudge supports three basic operators that can be helpful in some cases:

  • Plus Sign (+): Require a word to be present in all results by adding a plus sign before it. Useful for finding exact terms, e.g., +CompanyA or +NameB.
  • Minus Sign (-): Exclude results containing a specific word by placing a minus sign before it. For example, privacy policy -cookies.
  • Quotation Marks (""): Use quotes to exclude or enforce the presence of a phrase instead of a single word. For phrases, wrap the words in quotes. For example, +“capital band” or -“necessary cookies”.

Boolean Mode

DeepJudge recognizes that some users may prefer traditional boolean operators, particularly if they are accustomed to such systems from prior experience. While our advanced semantic search typically eliminates the need for boolean operators, we provide support for this method to ensure a seamless transition and accommodate diverse search preferences, all while leveraging the power of our cutting-edge search capabilities.

Simply start typing a search query that includes a boolean operator or parentheses, and you will see DeepJudge switch into "Boolean Mode" above the search bar. When in Boolean Mode, AND and NOT replace the standard operators used DeepJudge Search (+/-).

Users can use the following boolean operators:

  • AND: Retrieve results containing all specified terms.
  • OR: Retrieve results containing at least one of the specified terms.
  • NOT: Exclude results containing specific terms.
  • NEAR: Retrieve results where terms are close to each other.
